More about Northwest Homecrafters

Why did you choose this business?
I was first exposed to residential construction during my mid-teen years when I helped my father and a contractor he had hired construct a 2-car garage with an enclosed patio and breezeway. I was fascinated by construction and enjoyed the experience. But I decided to continue my education in a different direction after high school and chose to study forestry. Disenchanted and disappointed with the forest industry mindset of the mid-70s, I decided to pursue another direction. Leaving college, I moved to Seattle and began working in construction as a residential roofer for 3 years. I loved it.

I left the United States in 1980 for a period of just over 6 years to explore other parts of the world. During that time I made my way by working in many countries, nearly all of that work being in construction.

What do you most want for your clients?
As fine a job as they can hope for. The construction industry is known to be fraught with individuals who are less than focused craftsmen and competent business people. At Northwest Homecrafters, we constantly strive to create simple systems and checklists to circumvent possible problems at a jobsite. Our minimum goal is to meet every customer’s expectations, and then try to exceed them.  We want our clients to be so satisfied they will refer us to their friends.

Why have you developed systems?
Construction is simply too complex to manage without effective processes. It didn’t take me long to realize that if I was going to be successful in remodeling and construction, I would need effective and repeatable construction processes that make the experience as stress-free and logical as possible for my clients and employees. Realizing that remodeling projects are built in my clients’ homes…where they eat, sleep, play and live, and not in a vacuum, caused me to focus on service.

What do you enjoy about your work?
During my career as a residential contractor, I have evolved from a skilled craftsman and jobsite technician to an experienced business person who fully embraces the fundamentals of customer communication and internal process management. I have been fortunate throughout my career to be advised and coached by a number of successful (and unsuccessful) peers within the remodeling industry. This fellowship has allowed me the opportunity to see first-hand how important building a “professional” business is to becoming a success. Today, this business side of construction is extremely exciting to me. I very much enjoy this evolutionary process of my business. Business, as in life, is a live, learn and change process. Becoming better and more efficient is compelling.
